How we Walkfit?
Emma
Emma, 45, from Richmond, London is married with two children who have now left home. Emma has picked up her career as a midwife, and she’s enjoying the opportunity to work hours that suit her. In her spare time she is pursuing the interests she didn’t have time for before – such as gardening, visiting exhibitions, and even the occasional round of golf with Mike, her husband.
“When I was asked to test out Walkfit I thought why not? I liked the idea of taking part in an exercise group where I don’t have to be shy or intimidated as everyone else is young, fit, and thin.
It’s not like I’m in training for London 2012, and at my age I’m not interested in joining a gym, but I thought it would be nice to get some expert advice to get my fitness above its current level. I also liked the idea of doing something with people at the same level as me. Finally they said that I’d be able to talk to the other people, and to the instructor as we did the class, and that appealed – because I like a chat!
What was great was having fun with the other people in the group – and it was great to have Jim to tell us what to do and to keep things moving. If you didn’t know how to do a particular exercise, Jim would show you and how to do it properly. What we all learnt that day was that if you do an exercise right – it might make it a little bit harder, but it’ll be doing you so much more good! So when I said ‘What on earth is a squat?’ Jim explained that it was basically sitting down, and then standing up again, but without a chair!
It was great to be outdoors – really enjoying our local park, and even though the weather wasn’t always brilliant, because you don’t have to run or roll around on the floor, you could simply pull on a coat and still do the class. It actually made it even more fun sometimes, having a laugh in the rain, wondering what on earth we must look like to everyone else!”
