How we Walkfit?
David
David, 48, from Birmingham, has enjoyed a successful career in sales and marketing. He keeps up his love of sport through a Sky Sports subscription, but is worried that travel with work and a busy home life mean that he doesn’t do enough exercise. He shares Premiership season tickets with his son, and still trains occasionally with his old club.
“I love sport, and playing it was a big part of my life when I was younger. I had to give up playing football when it began to take me days to get over the games! Try explaining to your clients why you’re hobbling into a meeting room on a Tuesday morning because of a game of football you’d played on Sunday. I love watching sport on TV, and even though I’m reasonably health conscious, I was beginning to feel very guilty about the beer in my hand and the fact that I was making a big dent in the sofa!
So I needed something outdoors, which involved a little bit of fun. I can’t do classes or activities where they just tell you what to do, and then you have to do it over and over again. I guess I’m too old to be bored, and I want to know that I’m getting really good value for my time and my money. To be honest, when I was asked to do Walkfit I was worried that it might not be hard enough. After all, this was walking, and I can still just about run!
Once we got into the session however, I was surprised at how what seemed to be really easy exercises were a little bit harder than they looked. The instructors explained that we were probably using muscles that we didn’t often use, and that the benefit to us would be better flexibility, and muscle tone. Having the military guys there was great – you really felt that they knew what they were talking about. When they asked you to do something – they explained why, and how it would benefit you. Then when they mixed it up with some games – you forgot all about the exercise and just wanted to get stuck in and involved. Like a lot of people, I’ve got a lot of respect for the armed forces. They’re world reknowned as being excellent at what they do – and based on my experience of Walkfit, that reputation is well deserved.”
